On May 9, Creative Voices participated in "Take Back the Media," a forum sponsored by C-Ville Weekly, with Robert O’Neil, director of the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression; Roxanne Cooper of Rox Populi; Jessica Coen, editor of gawker.com; moderated by syndicated cartoonist Jen Sorenson, author of Slowpoke. On April 12, Creative Voices debated indecency regulation for an hour on NPR's "The Connection" against the American Family Association of Tupelo, Mississippi (Elvis's hometown, interestingly). The AFA is the group that urged its members to complain to the FCC that "Saving Private Ryan" was indecent. Fortunately, the FCC resisted that pressure campaign and found "Ryan" was not indecent. We made news debating the Parents TV Council on CNBC. Rather than agree with Sen. Ted Stevens that FCC broadcast indecency regs should extend to cable and satellite, PTC agreed that our solution was far preferable: give consumers the right to pick and choose what cable channels they want, rather than eat the broadcasters' and cable companies' "packages," larded with channels that offend them.
